best laid plans

This has been done a while, but I while waiting on work stuff, I was looking back at my SketchUp design for the chicken tractor I built for Kendre a few weeks ago.

I am pleased with how helpful the SketchUp drawing turned out to be. There are a number of things I would do differently but overall, working through it in the model helped me figure many things out ahead of time. In fact, the things I would change were largely things that I didn't do in detail in the model...

There is a blog that I read regularly about using SketchUp for woodwork design. "Design. Click. Build." is very well written and has lots of great tips and tricks. If you are interested in chicken tractors, The City Chicken has lots of photos for reference.

Looks good! Awesome job! What did you use to prevent varmits from getting in the cage?

so far, we've kept it within the radius of Drinian's wireless collar so he helps protect it. The tractor is pretty heavy (really needs wheels) and I try to set it level so there are no gaps under the edges. Since it's moved every other day or so, I don't think anything would be able to dig under in time without causing a commotion.

Sure - I added it to 3d Warehouse where you can download it now.

Note that this is just a design model - not a construction model - it leaves many construction details out. It really needs wheels since it's pretty heavy. Also, I would extend the siding further out from the nest area to protect the nest from rain. I hung feeder and waterer from chains near the door which is nice for access - but that leaves food exposed to rain.
